Abstract
Much of the information on the relationship between smoking and sensory faculties such as visual, auditory, taste sense has been reported. Especially, several clinical studies have suggested that cigarette smoking many be associated with hearing loss, a common condition affecting older adults. To examine the association between smoking and hearing loss, we searched and systemically reviewed cohort and case-control studies dealing with their relationship, which were published in the international literature.
A computerized search, covering the period 1966-1998, was carried out using Medline, Pubmed, Korea index medicus. Finally 14 studies were selected, and 6 studies of these publications were excluded because they used different study method or didn¢¥t furnish enough information for calculation.
Of the total 8 publications which met inclusion criteria, in 5 studies smoking had an adverse effect on hearing loss, while in the remainder 3 papers there were no significant correlation between smoking and hearing loss, In 5 papers which conducted the analysis of the association between pack-years of pack/day and hearing loss, 4 studies proved their correlation synthesizing their data, heavy smokers had a risk of hearing loss higher than light smokers.
